Hi Kim,
I did attend AWANA when I was a little girl at a nearby church (not my church). It was a really good experience, I remember many of the verses I memorized even today. I don't remember how long I went but it wasn't too long. My younger brothers and sisters love going to AWANAS during the school year now, and I think they're much more involved then I was. It's been great to see what an influence it has in their lives. I asked my littlest sister, who graduated from Cubbies last year, what she wanted to be when she grew up, and she told me, "A Cubbies leader." It was so cute! So yeah I wasn't as involved in the club as they are but it's obvious they enjoy it and I know I did, too.

No problem...if you have any other questions let me know.

Hi Keely,
My name is Kim and I work at Awana headquarters as the Web copywriter. I appreciated this recent post and noticed you mentioned Awana. When and where did you attend Awana? I hope it was a positive experience in your life--it sounds like it grounded your faith. I'd love to hear more of your story so feel free to contact me anytime at kima@awana.org.
Thanks!

I've been realizing that anorexia, etc. probably affects people that I know. I just don't realize it. May God open my eyes.
I appreciate how you brought out, that anorexia, etc. is a problem, it's just a symptom of a much bigger issue. It is very sobering to read of those who have died from such disorders.

Thank you for writing this! I have always maintained that "self-esteem" is kind of pointless. What does it matter how I esteem myself?...What really matters is what God thinks. As far as my own thoughts go, all that matters is whether I choose to agree or disagree with Him.

"I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me." 1 Corinthians 4:3-4

So it is not the esteem of others that counts. It is not SELF-esteem that counts, either. It is God's esteem -- and that depends on whether or not He sees you through the lens of Jesus Christ.

It's dumb (and sinful, incidentally) when we approach brothers or sisters in Christ with the mindset, "How does this person measure up to my expectations?". What we should be saying is, "This person has been redeemed by God. Let my eyes be opened to see and understand His Light in her!"

YAY C.S. Lewis! Numbers 2 and 3 remind me of an exercise I like to try, which is to express myself purely in 1-syllable words. It is a fun way to make your thoughts clear, or at least to try.

I got the idea from this quote by G.K. Chesterton from "Orthodoxy" (long quote, sorry!):

"It is a good exercise to try for once in a way to express any opinion one holds in words of one syllable. If you say "The social utility of the indeterminate sentence is recognized by all criminologists as a part of our sociological evolution towards a more humane and scientific view of punishment," you can go on talking like that for hours with hardly a movement of the gray matter inside your skull. But if you begin "I wish Jones to go to gaol and Brown to say when Jones shall come out," you will discover, with a thrill of horror, that you are obliged to think. The long words are not the hard words, it is the short words that are hard."
